Anomalous Hall conductivity control in MnNiN antiperovskite by epitaxial strain along the kagome plane
Antiferromagnetic manganese-based nitride antiperovskites, such as MnNiN,
hold a triangular frustrated magnetic ordering over their kagome lattice formed
by the Mn atoms along the (111)-plane. As such, frustration imposes a
non-trivial interplay between the symmetric and asymmetric magnetic
interactions, which can only reach equilibrium in a noncollinear magnetic
configuration. Consequently, the associated electronic interactions and their
possible tuning by external constraints, such as applied epitaxial strain, play
a crucial role in defining the microscopic and macroscopic properties of such
topological condensed matter systems. Thus, in the present work, we explored
and explained the effect of the epitaxial strain imposed within the
(111)-plane, in which the magnetic and crystallographic symmetry operations are
kept fixed, and only the magnitude of the ionic and electronic interactions are
tuned. We found a linear shifting in the energy of the band structure and a
linear increase/decrease of the available states near the Fermi level with the
applied strain. Concretely, the compression strain reduces the Mn-Mn distances
in the (111) kagome plane but linearly increases the separation between the
stacked kagome lattices and the available states near the Fermi level. Despite
the linear controlling of the available states across the Fermi energy, the
anomalous Hall conductivity shows a non-linear behavior where the
conductivity nearly vanishes for tensile strain. On the other
hand, fetches a maximum increase of 26\% about the unstrained
structure for a compression value close to 1.5\%.This behavior found an
explanation in the non-divergent Berry curvature within the kagome plane, which
is increased for constraining but significantly reduced for expansion strain
values..
WMR Kinematic Control Using Underactuated Mechanisms for Goal Direction and Evasion
This work presents the mechanical design and the kinematic navigation control system for a tricycle-wheeled robot (one drive-steer and two lateral fixed passive) with two underactuated mechanisms: a global compass and local evasive compass. The proposed goal-reference mechanism is inspired by the ancient Chinese south-seeking chariot (c. 200–265 CE) used as a navigation compass. The passive lateral wheels transmit an absolute angle from its differential speeds to automatically steer the front wheel. An obstacle-evasive compass mechanism is commutated for steering control when detecting nearby obstacles. The absolute and local compass mechanisms commutate each other to control to the robot’s steering wheel to reach a goal while avoiding collisions. A kinematic control law is described in terms of the robot’s geometric constraints and is combined with a set of first-order partial derivatives that allows interaction between the global and local steering mechanisms. Animated simulations and numerical computations about the robot’s mechanisms and trajectories in multi-obstacle scenarios validate the proposed kinematic control system and its feasibility
Periovulatory Hormonal Profiles after Estrus Induction and Conception Rate by Fixed-Time AI in Payoya Goats during the Anestrous Season
Sexual activity in domestic goats is positively influenced by reducing the photoperiod. Various protocols have therefore been developed in goats for the induction and synchronization of estrus during those months in which their sexual activity is reduced. The present observational study evaluates the periovulatory hormonal profile in Payoya goats (n = 24), during a non-favorable photoperiod (i.e., spring), being treated for estrus induction. The treatment comprised the vaginal insertion of sponges impregnated with progestogen (fluorogestone acetate, FGA), together with cloprostenol and equine chorionic gonadotrophin (eCG), 48 h before the end of the treatment. When the treatment ended, the plasma concentrations of the LH, FSH, progesterone and estradiol were determined. The goats were inseminated 46 h after the sponge withdrawal, and a pregnancy diagnosis was carried out 40–45 days after the insemination. Various parameters were monitored, such as the peaks of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and estradiol, and their respective intervals, in reference to the time of the sponge withdrawal. The conception rate was 62.5%, and the kidding rate was 50%. The results record the hormonal release pattern after the estrus synchronization treatment based on the FGA, and the differences between the pregnant and non-pregnant goats. The findings suggest that the LH peak produced after the estrus synchronization treatment, both in terms of the amplitude and the time of increment, is involved in the reproductive failure detected
Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Hispanics: The University of Puerto Rico IBD Registry
A registry of patients with inflammatory bowel
diseases, ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's
disease (CD), was created at the University of
Puerto Rico in 1995. Subjects with a documented
diagnosis of IBD by clinical, radiologic,
endoscopic, and/or pathologic criteria were
recruited from the IBD clinics, support groups, and
community practices, and demographic and medical
data was collected. All entries from 1995 to 2009
were analyzed for demographics, family history,
disease extent, extraintestinal manifestations,
surgery, and smoking history. Results were
described using summary statistics. 635 Hispanics
living in Puerto Rico, 299 with UC and 336 with CD,
were included. Mean ages were 40.3 for UC and 30.9
for CD. Over half (56%) of UC and 41% of
CD were females. Family history was present in
19.3% of UC and 17.5% of CD. Surgery for
IBD had been performed in 31.9% of UC and
51.2% of the CD patients. Over one-fourth of
the patients reported extraintestinal
manifestations, most frequently arthropathies. Our
findings contribute to the limited epidemiologic
and clinical data on Hispanics with IBD
Prevalence of Depressive Disorder in the Adult population of Latin America: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Background: Depressive disorder is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide; however its prevalence and association with inequality and crime is poorly characterised in Latin America. This study aimed to: i. systematically review population-based studies of prevalence of ICD/DSM depressive disorder in Latin America, ii. report pooled regional, country, and sex-specific prevalence estimates, and iii. test its association with four country-level development indicators: human development (HDI), income (Gini) and gender inequality (GII), and intentional homicide rate (IHR).
Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based studies reporting primary data on the prevalence of ICD/DSM depressive disorder in Latin America from 1990 to 2023, irrespective of language. We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, SciELO (regional database), LILAC (regional database), and available grey literature. Study quality was assessed using JBI’s critical appraisal tools. We generated pooled estimates using random-effects meta-analysis; heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 statistic. Meta-regression analyses were used to test associations of depression prevalence with indicators of inequality and human development. The study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42019143054).
Findings: Using data from 40 studies in Latin America, lifetime, 12-month, and current prevalence of ICD/DSM depressive disorder were calculated at 12.58% (95% CI 11.00%–14.16%); 5.30% (4.55–6.06%), and 3.12% (2.22–4.03), respectively. Heterogeneity was high across lifetime, 12-month, and current prevalence, sex, and countries. 12-month and current prevalence was associated with higher Gini and GII, 12-month prevalence with lower HDI, and current prevalence with higher IHR. Interpretation We found a high prevalence of ICD/DSM depressive disorders in Latin America, and a statistically significant association with inequality and development indicators. The high heterogeneity found across prevalence periods and the major gaps in country representation underscore the need to escalate efforts to improve mental health access and research capabilities in Latin America. Systematic, comparable prevalence estimates would inform more effective decision-making in the region
